Zippy Zaggy Zip Up
Please note this is a knitting pattern, not a finished garment to buy!
Once purchased, you will receive both a full colour and ‘printer friendly’ copy of the pattern :)
The Zippy Zaggy Zip Up is a fun, comfy, cozy & practical 100% cotton zip up!
It’s designed to have a boxy, oversized, slightly cropped fit that gathers in a little above the hips & at the sleeve cuffs. Easy to style & perfect for layering!
This pattern is a great stashbuster and can be knit from wool/blended yarns if you prefer, a great opportunity to get creative with yarn choices! You could easily knit this in alternating stripes, all different colours or a solid colour if you prefer. The 2 samples shown here are both size 2, the colourful sample is knitted in Drops Paris and Paintbox Cotton DK, the blue sample is knitted in Drops Lima.
Sizing:
Measurements are given for the final chest circumference of the garment. I recommend measuring a similar garment that you like the fit of for reference. This pattern is designed to have a roomy oversized fit with around 18cm of positive ease around the body & upper arms. The ribbing gathers in a little at the bottom around the hips and at the sleeve cuffs.
Sizes: 1, (2, 3, 4)
Garment chest circumference: 105, (117, 127, 136) cm / 41, (46, 50, 54)”
Sleeve circumference at widest point: 48, (50, 55, 57) cm / 18, (19, 21, 22)”
These sizes correspond to Craft Yarn Council’s sizes S, M, L, 2XL. Sample is knitted in size 2. The raglan construction means it’s easy to customise sizing further by adding more/less increases at the yoke, & casting on more/less sts at the underarm.
I recommend trying on your piece throughout the making process to ensure you are happy with the fit.
Needles:
Using circular needles allows for easier trying on throughout the making process, though most elements are knit flat.
4mm (US 6) circular needles for main body, 93cm/37” cable & long cable for magic loop on sleeves/shorties if you prefer.
3.5mm (US 4) circular needles for ribbing/edging, 125cm/50” cable.
Gauge:
20 sts X 33 rows in stockinette on 4mm needles (wet blocked) = 10X10cm
Yarn:
Cotton DK yarn - use up scraps! I wouldn’t recommend using all Drops Paris as it’s quite heavy. Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/6 works really well. Don’t worry about slightly different weights; using aran & DK gives a nice mix of structure & drape to the garment, be open & have fun in your yarn choices! I used:
C1 – Drops Paris, aran weight, 50g/75m (colour 44, brown)
C2 – Scraps of cotton yarn, mostly Paintbox Cotton DK, 50g/125m
Zip:
Open ended zip matching C1 or a contrast colour. Measure from collarbone to hip/desired length. You can cut down a longer zipper if needed.
Notions:
8 st markers, st holders, tape measure, scissors, blocking mat/towel, pins, tapestry & sewing needle, sewing thread for zip installation.
Yardage:
Please note this may vary if using different fibres/weights of yarn.
Yardage will vary depending on chosen yarn. These calculations are based on C1 as Drops Paris & C2 as Paintbox Cotton DK.
C1, Drops Paris: 500, (550, 650, 650)g / 750, (825, 975, 975)m/820, (900, 1066, 1066) yds
C2, Paintbox Cotton DK: 300 (300, 350, 400)g / 750, (750, 875, 1000)m/820 (820, 957, 1094) yds
Skeins in the recommended yarn:
C1, Drops Paris: 10, (11, 13, 13) skeins
C2, Paintbox Cotton DK: 6, (6, 7, 8) skeins
